Tire balancing
Tire balancing is a crucial part of tire maintenance for your vehicle. You're driving down the road and you notice that your car shakes or wobbles. While you may not think it's a big deal, it could mean that your tires are out of balance. Knowing the pros and cons of tire balancing can make all the difference between a smooth, safe ride and premature wear or even a flat tire
Adhesive weights or impact weights?
Sticky weights and impact weights are two different types of wheel balancing weights used to balance the wheels on vehicles.
Adhesive weights, as the name suggests, are self-adhesive and attach to the rim. They are usually made of steel or zinc, and come in various sizes and shapes. Adhesive weights are usually used on aluminum rims or wheels with sensitive surfaces that can be damaged by traditional impact weights.
They are easy to install and provide a clean and stylish look.
Impact weights are attached to the edge of the rim with a metal clip that clamps down. They are usually made of zinc or steel and come in various sizes and shapes. Impact weights are typically used on steel rims where they can be clamped to the outer edge of the rim without causing any damage. They are more durable than adhesive weights.
Generally speaking, the main difference between adhesive weights and impact weights is their method of attachment to the rim edge. Adhesive weights are self-adhesive, while impact weights are attached with a metal clip. The choice between the two types of weights depends on the type of wheel to be balanced and the preferences of the tire fitter performing the balancing.
Installation of adhesive weight
If you haven't been through the application of Adhesive Weights, you might appreciate this quick insight into how they work.
1. Preparatory work – First rotate the tire and determine the wheel imbalance in both planes. Ideally, the weight, rim and ambient temperature should be around 15 degrees Celsius as this will allow the adhesive on the back to perform at its best. But the Prosteel weights have a tape that sticks to rims down to -13.9°C read more about it here.
2. Clean the rims thoroughly with a suitable cleaning agent to avoid grease and silicone residues on the rim. On new or renovated rims, we recommend an Isopropyl-based cleaning agent. It is important to also remove old adhesive weight residues and this is best done with one rubber pulley.
2. Remove the protective film - After identifying the weight position of the rim, peel off the protective film without touching the adhesive.
3. Assembling the weight – Now press the weight against the rim from the center towards the outer edges. The pressure should be applied for at least 20 seconds.
After assembly, 80%-90% of the final adhesive force is reached after about 24 hours.
Full adhesion is achieved after 72 hours of application.
